    2019 Holiday Gift Guide

The Holidays Are Coming…   Do you have everything you plan to gift to the littles in your life? I like collecting gifts early, around September, so that I am not rushed during the slow season. For me, the holidays are about family: dancing, eating, laughing, story-telling, singing, playing games, cuddling up, and visiting. Not shopping. I am not particularly a fan of jam-packed parking lots, long lines, and the pressure of a ‘sale’. I do, however, enjoy online shopping and supporting small shops for each holiday season. Below, I’ve curated a simple list of potential gift ideas for children. These are things that are fruitful, quality, long-lasting, and can…

Math Review-Singapore & Simply Charlotte Mason

MATH It’s quite a point of anxiety for most people. Families are paralyzed by the curriculum choices. Some parents find they need to switch when one curriculum isn’t working-only to find they don’t care for the replacement option either. Most math curricula can be quite pricey-especially the ones that include games and manipulatives. Not only is it an investment into our child’s future, it is an investment financially as well. Singapore Dimensions I was certainly in the former group. I was so scared of choosing ‘the wrong’ curriculum, that I simply chose none at all. I worked with my son through manipulatives, games, worksheets & workbooks until I felt his…

    State Studies

How State Studies Started As I’ve said before, unit studies are my life. They are how I think, how I plan, how I teach my kids and how my kids love to learn. When my son was 4 1/2, I decided I wanted to do something more interesting, something big, something more cohesive for his Kindergarten year of homeschooling. Numbers, letters and shapes were fun, but I thought he’d progress in a more meaningful way if that information was part of something larger, if he could see how it fits in and applies. I thought long and hard and came up with my own program which I dubbed State Studies.…

    Global Tiger Day

Today I want to bring awareness to something that is important. This blog post may be disheartening, but hopefully, by the end, you will leave with a sense of hope and some tools to help undo the devastating decimation of a particularly beautiful animal. The Tiger. July 29th is International Tiger Day. I know there has been a bombardment of various ‘holidays’ and dates coined by companies trying to push something or sell a product. This is different. This is concerning an issue that affects our earth and our ecosystem and our future. The Facts: According to the WWF there are only 3900 wild tigers left in the world. That’s…

Do You Use YouTube To Homeschool?

Some families have the no-or-limit screen policy, some use screens just for school or just for fun. We use screens for learning and fun in the format of YouTube videos. But, I do limit their use including days with no screens at all: no tv, no video or phone games, no iPad, no computer. Sometimes, all of us need a break from technology in order to reconnect with the Earth and ourselves. With that being said, I have found tablets to be a wonderful addition to our homeschooling routine. When we learn about geography or animals or historical landmarks, few resources can grab my child’s attention in an interactive way.…
